Kitten Guide

You brought your kitten home, now what?

Food

Healthy diet and hydration is very important to the growth and development of your maine coon.

We use special formula of Royal Canin that is specifically made for mama's and kittens. Your kitten will get a started pack that is enough for your to start transitioning to your food of choice.

The most important aspects of nutrition is high protein and water/moisture.

There is a lot of different ways of making that happen and it is very important for you to figure out what works for you and your kitty.

Toys

Maine coon kittens are just as active as any other kitten. They also don't need a whole lot of stuff to be entertained.

Fun fact, Maine coons are not considered 'adults' until they are between 3-5 years old!

We recommend wands, tunnels (very popular with our cats), something to chase, and cat nip plushies. Main thing is, paying attention to the quality and durability, you do not want anything loose or with lots of small details that can be ingested. Things like wands need to be kept away from cats when you are not using it.

The easiest and most accessible is cardboard boxes from your local Costco or amazon deliveries.

Grooming

Cats need grooming!

While they are less maintenance than long haired dogs, cats do need regular brushing and in some cases baths. Maine coons are long haired cats and have a propensity for matting in high friction areas ("armpit" area of the legs, mane and underneath the tail).

Some kitties need what is called a sanitary trim (using scissors or a shaver trimming around their butt) since they might sit down in their own mess or be lazy about cleaning back there. Make sure you have another person helping you keep your kitty secure or visit a professional groomer/vet.

I don't find the vacuum style groomer that is very popular necessary or helpful, as the loud noise is stressful for the kitty and the attachments are too thin and unable to properly groom the cats.

There are only two tools you need, a sturdy metal comb and nail clippers.

Please avoid using plastic combs or brushes as they cause static and break easily
